"Uva Ursi - Treats Urinary Tract Infections and More"

By Kearney Adams

uva ursiUva ursi, also known as bearberry, is an evergreen shrub that is found throughout the Northern Hemisphere, whose primary use is a treatment for urinary tract problems, but has other uses as well.

Its leaves but not its berries are used in herbal preparations. It has antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiseptic, astringent and diuretic qualities.

Uses

Uva ursi contains chemicals that make it a useful treatment for urinary conditions such as cystitis, urethritis and nephritis. In fact, until the discovery of sulfa drugs and antibiotics, this herb was the herb of choice for urinary disorders.

Its primary component, arbutin, is absorbed in the stomach and is converted into a substance that has antimicrobial, astringent and disinfectant properties. As it is eliminated from the body during urination, it soothes irritated mucous membranes of the urinary tract, reducing inflammation and fighting any infection found there.

You should be aware that in order for this herb to be effective, your urine should remain alkaline, as it neutralizes acidity in the urine. Avoid foods that are acidic, such as pineapple and fruit juices.

By drinking a mixture of 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda with an 8-ounce glass of water you can help ensure you remain in an alkaline state.

Arbutin has also shown to be effective against the E. coli bacteria, as it has antibacterial properties.

It may also be effective against certain yeast infections such as candida albicans.

Additionally, a tea brewed from its leaves can be used for a laxative.

It may also function as a diuretic as it increases urine flow. This would help to reduce any bloating and retention of fluids, making it helpful for those wishing to lose weight.

Diuretics are sometimes used to help lower blood pressure. However, it may also deplete your body's potassium levels, so you should increase your intake of bananas and fresh vegetables.
