"Reishi - Can Lower Cholesterol Levels and Blood Sugar Levels"

By Kearney Adams

reishiThe reishi mushroom, known in Japan as the 'phantom mushroom' as it can be very difficult to find, is a popular food that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 2000 years.

It is considered by many to be an adaptogenic herb, which is a herb that helps the body better adapt to stress. But it has many other health benefits as well, such is its ability to lower cholesterol levels, fight cancer, and lower blood sugar levels in diabetics.

It Is A Potent Cancer Fighter

It can also be a useful food for fighting cancer.

This is because of its ability to stimulate the production of interleukin-2.

Interleukin-2 is a type of protein that is made by white blood cells that increases the growth and activity of T-lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes, which stimulates the immune response.

Research indicates that it contains polysaccharide beta-1, which is the chemical thought to be responsible for the above-mentioned actions.

It also contains another polysaccharide, called glucan, which are also thought to have anti-tumor capabilities.

In one clinical trial of individuals given the extract of this mushroom, they experienced an improved quality of life and improved immune system function, which are typically reduced or damaged with cancer patients that are receiving chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.

It is also thought that it helps these immune system cells to bind to cancerous tumor cells.

Many scientists think that it reduces the number of cancerous cells, making it easier for various white blood cells to eliminate them from the body.

Over the past decade, it has been successfully used in Japan as a cancer treatment.

It Can Reduce Your Cholesterol Levels Too

There is some evidence that reishi can lower cholesterol levels. They're been numerous studies indicating its ability to lower the bad, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides.

It contains a chemical called ganoderic acid, which is thought to be responsible for its cholesterol-lowering capabilities.

Reishi eliminates the buildup of cholesterol and helps to promote blood circulation. In a normal individual, blood cholesterol levels range between 130 to 230 mg per decimalitre. In individuals whose cholesterol levels are elevated, it can be 300 mg/dl or higher. If you can improve blood circulation, which this mushroom does, you can help minimize the above-mentioned problems.

In a laboratory experiment involving three groups of mice that were given different diets over four consecutive days. The first group was fed a high fat diet. The second was fed a high-fat diet and reishi. The third group, which was the control group, was fed a regular diet.

At the end of the experiment, as could be expected, the first group, the high fat group, was found to have increased levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and proteins. But the second group, the group fed the high fat diet plus this mushroom, showed normal levels in all three categories.

It Can Help Control Blood Sugar Levels
In Diabetics

It may also prove useful in lowering blood sugar levels in diabetics.

In a laboratory study of animals that were given this mushroom, it was found that it's slightly decreased levels of glucose in the blood of diabetics.

It is thought that the above-mentioned ganoderic acids are responsible for its blood sugar lowering ability.

Apparently, the fungus extract from this mushroom increases and prolongs the effects of insulin, while increasing the tissue's sensitivity to it.

Other Uses

Here are some others suggested uses of this mushroom:

  • It improves liver function
  • It can treat immune system disorders such as AIDS
  • It can help fight the flu
  • It can help individuals with allergies

Recommended Dosage

A recommended dosage of reishi is 2-6 g per day eaten raw with meals. However, in clinical trials of patients with cancer or diabetes, 600 to 1800 mg were taken three times a day.

As a treatment for high blood pressure, a dosage of 55 mg daily for four weeks has been recommended. As an immune system stimulant, taking 100 mg of the extract taken from this mushroom can help.

Side Effects, Cautions and Drug Interactions

Reishi is probably the most popular medicinal mushroom in the world, but it may have certain side effects when consumed.

If it is used continuously for 3-6 months, you may experience a certain dryness of your mouth, nasal passages and throat.

You may also experience an allergic reaction, upset stomach, a skin rash and a headache.

Diabetics currently taking hypoglycemic drugs should use caution when taking this food, as it may lower blood sugar levels.

As it tends to thin the blood, if you are taking a blood thinner such as Coumadin, you should use caution when eating his food.

Also, if you have some sort of bleeding disorder, you should avoid eating as much room.

In ancient Eastern medicine, reishi is considered the "mushroom of immortality."

While I wouldn't go that far, it can certainly be a very healthy adaptogen to stimulate your immune system. This will help equip your body to better fight certain serious illnesses including those mentioned above.
