Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a condition that affects over 43 million Americans.
Of those taking medications, less than 43% actually get their blood pressure down to safe levels.
There are supplements, however, that may help get this condition under control.
What is it?
[Top] As blood circulates through the arterial and venous walls, blood exerts a force against them. This force is known as blood pressure. It is part of a complex system involving the heart, the kidneys, the brain, the adrenal glands and the blood vessels.
Normally, this blood pressure fluctuates constantly, but in some individuals this pressure remains at high levels. This condition is known as Hypertension.
There are two numbers used in a blood pressure measurement. The top number, called the systolic reading, reflects the arterial pressure when the heart contracts and blood is first pumped into the arteries. The second number, called the diastolic reading, measures the arterial pressure when the heart is at rest.
According to a report from the website inCirculation.net, The American Heart Association, the Preventive Cardiovascular Nurses' Association, and the American Society of Hypertension have issued a joint statement recommending that hypertensive patients monitor their blood pressure levels at home so that they may achieve target levels. Many individuals fail to reach target levels, and it is thought that monitoring BP levels at home may help.
You may have Prehypertension if the systolic reading is between 120 to 139 and the diastolic reading ranges from 80 to 89. Prehypertension has a tendency to get worse over time.
What is a high blood pressure reading?
[Top] In a normal person, the systolic pressure hovers around 120, with the diastolic pressure less than 80.
Although there are numerous sites on the net advocating a diastolic reading around 80, many cardiologist today recommend it be closer to 70. Their thinking is, once that number gets in the eighties, it is very close to being high. So, to play it safe, they feel that a number in the seventies is best. This would be written as 120/70 mmHg.
When the numbers hover near or above 140/90 mmHg for extended periods you are considered to have high blood pressure.
What are its symptoms?
[Top] Many people are unaware they have hypertension as they may initially have no symptoms of all. Here is a list of symptoms possibly associated with this condition:
Vague symptoms - a general feeling of malaise that something is wrong.
Headaches - sometimes occurring in the morning.
Dizziness
Tinnitus - a ringing in one or both ears.
Confusion
Papilloedema - a swelling of the optic disc
Who gets it?
[Top] In most cases, the underlying cause is unknown. However, men are more likely to develop this disease than women. A family history of hypertension puts an individual of greater risk of developing this disease. Obesity, smoking, and a diet high in sodium may contribute to its development.
Why is it dangerous?
[Top] High blood pressure is commonly known as the silent killer, as it initially presents no symptoms and can be deadly.
This high pressure alters the arterial cells in the arterial lining and can lead to a condition known as hardening of the arteries.
Over time, this pressure can weaken the blood vessel walls, resulting in an aneurysm, or a bulge. In turn, this aneurysm may rupture resulting in life-threatening internal bleeding.
Hypertension may also damage the heart and lead to Coronary artery disease, which is caused by restricted blood flow to the heart. You are also at risk for developing other cardiovascular conditions such as Stroke and left-side heart failure.
It can also lead to kidney disease and failure. Check with your physician for a complete list of all complications.
[Top] There are several supplements that may be beneficial for this condition.Garlic may help to lower blood pressure.
Several years ago, my mother had a stroke, which was caused by high blood pressure. I suggested she start taking garlic for her blood pressure. She did, and within a short period of time, had lowered her blood pressure by 11 percent. more on Garlic...
Onion - My former boss, who was a physical therapist, had high blood pressure. He told me the best way to immediately lower high blood pressure was to take a bite of an onion.
These suggestions are not meant to replace any medications prescribed by your physician. Also, check with your healthcare professional for any drug interactions before taking any of the abovementioned supplements.
Avoid processed foods that contain high amounts of salt
Quit smoking
Exercise 30 minutes each day
Practice relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation and biofeedback
Limit your alcohol consumption
Make sure any medications you may be taking are not contributing to your Hypertension
If you are one of the 43 million Americans with Hypertension, you need to develop a healthy fear of this condition. If left unchecked, the consequences could be fatal.
A recent statistic from a few years ago stated that over 16,000 people died during that year as a result of high blood pressure.
Take action to insure you are not a part of some future mortality statistic.
