The Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a form of psychological acupressure you can employ to improve your emotional health. It is a simple procedure to learn, and can help with such problems as removing negative emotions, reducing food cravings, reducing or eliminating pain and implementing positive goals.
All of this is done without the invasiveness of needles. Many health problems have an emotional cause that cannot be fixed by proper lifestyle and diet alone.
What It Involves
The Emotional Freedom Technique is based on the same meridians that are used in traditional acupuncture to treat emotional and physical problems.
Over 5000 years ago, the Chinese discovered meridians, which are pathways in the body where energy is thought to flow.
By simply tapping on these meridians while focusing on a specific problem, you clear your emotions, giving balance to your body and mind.
How Does It Work?
There are two basic areas you need to understand in order to learn use the Emotional Freedom Technique: the tapping locations and technique, and the positive affirmations you will voice.
You will be able to treat a number of problems by following the subsequent instructions.
First, you must understand you will be tapping with the tips of your fingers.
Your fingertips contain several meridians that are used in addition to the meridians you'll be tapping on.
The basic Emotional Freedom Technique uses just the fingertips of your index and middle fingers as you tap on various locations on your body.
When tapping on the points mentioned below, you should tap between five and seven times, or about the length of time it takes for one complete breath.
You can tap on these points in any order; just remember to tap on all the points.
The Tapping Points
Here's a list of the areas you should tap when starting to use the Emotional Freedom Technique. Remember to use the index and middle fingers, in a slightly curved position.
You can use one or both hands. However, if you use both hands, alternate to tapping so that both hands are not tapping simultaneously.
The top of the head - at the center of the skull.
Eyebrow - this is just above and to the side of the nose where the eyebrow begins.
Side of the eye - on the bone on the outside corner of your eye.
Under the eye - tap on the bone about one-inch below your pupils.
Under the nose - tap on the area between your upper lip in the bottom of your nose.
Chin - tap at the midpoint of your chin, halfway between the bottom of your chin in the bottom of your lower lip.
Collarbone -The intersection where the collarbone (clavicle), the breastbone and the first rib meet. This is a very important point in acupuncture and is referred to as K 27.
To find this area, place your forefinger on the U-shaped notch at the top of your breastbone, from there move your finger down one inch and then to the left (or right) 1 inch.
Under the arm - on the sides of the body, at a point even with the nipple. It would be approximately 4 inches below the armpit.
Wrists - the last area is the inside of both wrists.
Tuning Into the Problem
Now that you understand how and where to tap, you need to know what to say while tapping. Here is the standard Emotional Freedom Technique phrase: "Even though I have this _______________, I deeply and completely accept myself." Just fill in the blank with whatever problem you wish to address.
Here are some examples of phrases you might use:
"Even though I have this back pain, I deeply and completely accept myself."
"Even though I am worried about my job security, I deeply and completely accept myself."
"Even though I an angry at my husband, I deeply and completely accept myself."
"Even though I have trouble falling asleep, I deeply and completely accept myself."
"Even though I have this fear of spiders, I deeply and completely accept myself."
You don't have to believe these affirmations, just saying them will help you to tune into your problem. You may not see results after your first attempt, but you may very likely see them as you continue. You should do the Emotional Freedom Technique about 10 times daily.
Putting It All Together
After you have decided on which affirmation you wish to use, you begin to tap on each of the areas mentioned above.
As you do this, try to focus on the problem, while stating the affirmations and a loud, passionate manner.
After doing this, you may see a major decrease in the problem you're dealing with.
However, if you don't see any change, you can use a reminder phrase in additional sessions.
For example, if you're working on a fear of public speaking, you can use the phrase, "fear of public speaking" as your reminder phrase in subsequent sessions.
The Emotional Freedom Technique is a unique problem-solving procedure that can be used for many issues. In fact, you can try it on just about everything, such as fears you have, anger problems, stress issues and more.
Just begin the process by identifying a problem, then voicing an affirmation, while tapping on the areas mentioned above. If you do these things, you may be able to solve problems that you have been previously been unable to resolve.
