By something so commonplace, you'll be shocked once it's revealed to you.

Research, however, confirms its effectiveness.

I first learned of its protective qualities as I was watching the television show Sunday Housecall, hosted by Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld.

He suggested that everyone should start taking this chemical in mid-life, especially if you have a family history of Alzheimer’s disease.

What compound prevents Alzheimer's disease?
A common food additive with surprising benefits

[Top] Here I delve into the 'Kearney Adams book of little-known, probably Oriental, exotic herbal remedies that certainly will bring about a life-changing event!'

Are you ready?

Drinking one to three cups of coffee daily.

That's it.

Actually the nutritive bad-guy, caffeine is the magic ingredient. Everything you know about caffeine is WRONG! Numerous studies proclaim its protective qualities.

Google News reports the ADVANCE for Speech-Language Patholigists and Audiologists website provides insight on the Stroke/Alzheimer's disease connection.

For years, neuroscientists have known the likelihood of developing Alzheimer's disease is nearly doubled in those who've had a stroke. Columbia University Medical Center researchers in Manhattan may have an answer to explain this.

After a stroke, there is an increase in production of toxic amyloid beta (Aß) peptides thought to cause Alzheimer's.

Researchers have discovered a pathway known as p25/cdk5, whereby higher production of p25 led to increased production of cdk5 with a subsequent increase in Aß peptides.

When scientists reduced cdk5 activity, they limited production of Aß peptides.

Results indicate this pathway "may be a treatment target for Alzheimer's disease - in particular, inhibitors of cdk5 are particular candidates for therapeutic development."

In particular, a 2002 study in the European Journal of Neurology found consuming more caffeine in midlife helps prevent Alzheimer's disease later.

What is Alzheimer's
Scientists don't know what causes changes in the brain

[Top] Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, neurodegenerative brain disease where language, memory and cognitive function are impaired, preventing normal functioning.

In addition, age is the most important risk factor, as the number of people with Alzheimer's doubles every year beyond the age of 65. It can occur in individuals in their 30s.

In the brain, it is characterized by areas of plaque and tangled bundles of protein fibers.

What are the symptoms of Alzheimer's?
Early detection is important

[Top] The Alzheimer's Association has a checklist of symptoms to recognize differences between normal age-related memory changes and warning signs of Alzheimer's. They are:

  • Memory loss- forgetting freshly learned information.
  • Difficulty performing common tasks.
  • Language problems - forgetting common words or problems finding words.
  • Disorientation to place and time - getting lost in their neighborhood, unable to get home.
  • Poor judgment - dressing inappropriately, wearing excessive clothing when it's hot or not enough when it's cold.
  • Problems solving complex problems.
  • Misplacing items in unusual places.
  • Personality changes - becoming fearful or suspicious of family.
  • Losing initiative - watching television for hours, sleeping too much, or losing interest in typical activities.

What are the stages of Alzheimer's?
Knowing its stages helps you better care for your loved one

The three stages of Alzheimer's are:

  • [Top] Stage 1 is characterized by minimal energy, mood swings and memory loss.

Confusion, poor judgment, a reluctance to try new things is common. Disorientation and getting lost frequently occurs.

  • In Stage 2 they still can perform tasks, but need assistance with complex activities. Speech becomes slower and they forget where they are.

They lose their train of thought in mid-sentence. Depression or irritability develops as they become aware of their lost functionality.

  • In Stage 3 they can't chew and swallow. They can't recognize familiar persons. They lose control of their bladder and bowels and need continual care.

They are prone to develop Pneumonia, infections, and other diseases. They may become bedridden, with a worsening of respiratory problems, which leads to death.

How is it diagnosed?
Mental tests and family history helps to make a diagnosis

[Top] When an individual has any of the abovementioned symptoms, see your doctor. He will take a complete medical and family history and perform a series of tests.

Consequently, identifying mild cases of Alzheimer's disease can be difficult. He may need to talk to others while gathering more information. He may refer you to specialists such as a neurologist, psychiatrist, or a psychologist.

I know it sounds unbelievable, but, for most healthy people, caffeine, in moderation, is good for you.

The Inkspots, in the 1940's got it right when they sang:

“I like coffee, I like tea, I like the java jive and it likes me”
